An attempt on individual toxicity of lead nitrate and barium chloride on the Indian major carps, catla, rohu and mrigal was carried out as they are the natural inhabitants of the perennial rivers network of India and neighbouring countries where pollutants are becoming a major stress factor for these commercially important edible fishes. For all the three major carps, the 96 hr LC50 and Sub Lethal Concentration (SLC) were in the order of Lead nitrate > Barium chloride. In the individual toxicity studies, the three carps exhibited a decreasing trend in total proteins and total lipids in all the test tissues but liver alone showed an increasing trend with reference to carbohydrate content. Keywords

Evaluating the toxic effect of an organochlorine pesticide, endosulfan and heavy metal lead on the fingerlings of Indian carp Labeo rohita was the prime aim. Individual and successive exposure of the two toxicants was assessed. 96 hr LC50 studies on pesticide and heavy metal resulted in the sub lethal concentration of 4 ppm and 87.5 ppm respectively. Post exposure estimation of nutritional parameters; total proteins, total carbohydrates and total lipids on muscle, liver, brain and kidney of the fish was done for individual toxicants. The impairment of metabolism was found to be more on lead exposure compared to endosulfan. Successive exposure study of the two environmental stressors was carried out to consider the combination effect on the nutritional status of the test fish. Keywords

Eco-friendly pest and disease control is a cost effective and environmentally safe practice to follow. In order to address farmer’s problem and promote eco-friendly approaches in management of pests like tobacco caterpillar, leaf miner, aphids, thrips, ischolar_main rot and leaf spot diseases in Groundnut, Front Line Demonstration (FLD) was conducted. The trial showed that seed treatment with Trichoderma and soil application with Pseudomonas effectively managed ischolar_main rot incidence compared to farmer’s practice where no such treatment was made which resulted in ischolar_main rot incidence (5%). Installation of light traps and sticky traps effectively monitored the sucking pests. By the use of pheromone traps, the farmers completely avoided application of chemical pesticides to control tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera litura), where adult moths of nearly 25 nos/week were trapped. This resulted in saving of INR 3500/- and an yield of 28q/ha was obtained compared to farmer’s practice (26 q/ha).
